Bluegrass music legend Ralph Stanley poses outside his museum in Clintwood, Va., Wednesday, April 19, 2006. The 79-year-old patriarch of mountain music has always had a progressive streak. His stirring rendering of 'O Death' on the 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?' movie soundtrack introduced him to young audiences the world over, and his latest recording, a tribute to the Carter Family, taps a contemporary fascination with roots music. Nice Associated Press story being released this weekend on Ralph Stanley. Click the photo to see it.

"He's one of those rare guys who what he does is so pure and so defined, and he's so unwavering in it," said singer-songwriter Gillian Welch, who's recorded and performed with Stanley.

There is a audio slide show as well.
