Echoes of Ralph Stanley

Bluegrass music legend Ralph Stanley poses outside his museum in Clintwood, Va., Wednesday, April 19, 2006. The 79-year-old patriarch of mountain music has always had a progressive streak. His stirring rendering of 'O Death' on the 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?' movie soundtrack introduced him to young audiences the world over, and his latest recording, a tribute to the Carter Family, taps a contemporary fascination with roots music. "He's one of those rare guys who what he does is so pure and so defined, and he's so unwavering in it," said singer-songwriter Gillian Welch, who's recorded and performed with Stanley.

There is a audio slide show as well.
